The Indianapolis Colts may now have one of the deepest groups of wide receivers in football.

The Colts took University of Texas star Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the NFL Draft last week, adding him to a crop of wide outs that also includes Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and Alec Pierce.

Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team loves the fit for Mitchell.

“Mitchell will quickly solve that WR2 issue,” wrote Valentino. “The Colts ran many vertical routes from the slot and needed a reliable intermediate option. Mitchell has the route-running savvy, size and quickness that translates to the field and is especially good for slot-go routes.”

Mitchell is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he hauled in 55 receptions for 846 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The 21-year-old began his collegiate career at Georgia in 2021, catching 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns during his debut season. However, the following year, Mitchell was limited to just six games due to injury, and he logged only nine catches for 134 yards and three scores.

He transferred to Texas that ensuing offseason.

Mitchell has great size at 6-foot-4 and around 200 pounds and also possesses terrific speed, as he flashed a 4.34-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine.

Suddenly, Indianapolis will have one of the biggest receiving corps in the league, as Pittman also stands 6-foot-4 and Pierce is 6-foot-3 (although Pierce may be relegated to the role of the fourth receiver if Mitchell comes in and immediately produces).

One thing is for sure: second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson will have a plethora of weapons at his disposal in what will (hopefully) be his first full season under center for Indy, as he played in just four games in 2023 as a result of injuries.
