Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a polarizing figure. Is he a great quarterback? Is he merely a product of great receivers? Is he somewhere in between?
Whatever the case may be, no one can deny that Tagovailoa is posting some spectacular numbers this season, as the NFL on CBS points out.
Through 15 games this year, Tagovailoa leads the NFL in passing yards (4,214) and completion percentage (70.5 percent). He is also second in passer rating (105.4), second in yards per pass attempt (8.5) and tied for second in wins (11).
Tagovailoa has also thrown 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Typically, those types of numbers would qualify a quarterback for MVP candidacy, but due to the fact that wide out Tyreek Hill is considered by most to be the best offensive player on the Dolphins, the chances of Tagovailoa winning the award—or even garnering considerable attention for it—seem slim.
The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by Miami with the fifth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He made nine starts during his rookie campaign, throwing for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns and five picks while completing 64.1 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 87.1.
The following year, Tagovailoa started 12 games and totaled 2,653 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 67.8 percent of his throws and recording a passer rating of 90.1.
Then, last season, the Ewa Beach, Hi. native broke out, finishing with 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight picks. He completed 64.8 percent of his passes and led the NFL with a 105.5 passer rating.
Most recently, Tua Tagovailoa went 24-for-37 with 293 yards and a touchdown in a win over the Dallas Cowboys this past weekened.
The Dolphins are 11-4 and will take on the Baltimore Ravens in a pivotal clash next weekend before ending the season with an AFC East showdown against the Buffalo Bills.
