Given that Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers was a healthy scratch in the Rams’ Week 2 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, his future in Los Angeles seems to be coming to a close.
Akers has been a relative disappointment since being selected by the Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
After a solid rookie campaign in which he totaled 625 yards and a couple of touchdowns, Akers tore his Achilles in Week 1 of the 2021 season. He returned in 2022, tallying 786 yards and seven scores, but he was rather inefficient, averaging just 4.2 yards per carry.
To start the 2023 campaign, Akers carried the ball 22 times for a meager 29 yards in Los Angeles’ Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Joe Rivera of The Sporting News listed five potential landing spots for Akers in the event of a trade. The five clubs were the Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins.
Taking into consideration the Colts’ murky situation with Jonathan Taylor, it’s no surprise they are on this list. The Giants have Saquon Barkley, but the oft-injured halfback suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 which could hamper him going forward. The Ravens lost J.K. Dobbins for the year because of a torn Achilles, so they also make sense. The Vikings recently parted ways with Dalvin Cook, and the Dolphins had been rumored as a potential destination for Taylor.
While Cam Akers certainly isn’t Taylor, his presence would beef up Miami’s rather thin backfield as the team primes for a potential Super Bowl run.
The Rams appear to be more willing to roll with Kyren Williams, a 2022 fifth-round pick, as their featured back moving forward. Williams carried the ball 14 times for 52 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers. In the week prior, he posted 52 yards and a pair of scores while rushing the ball 15 times.
