Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields finally had an impressive showing this past Sunday, going 28-for-35 with 335 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in a Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos. However, there has been plenty of speculation that the Bears could be moving on from Fields, and ESPN commentator Mike Greenberg feels that the Atlanta Falcons would be a prime destination for him.
Here is what Greenberg had to say on the topic:
“If Justin Fields was the quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons right this minute, they would be a thousand times better off,” Greenberg said on ESPN’s Get Up this week.
Greenberg feels that Chicago is not utilizing Fields correctly and that if the young signal-caller were playing in a better situation (like Atlanta), you would truly see his talent.
Fields himself criticized the Bears’ coaching staff for his “robotic” play after Week 2, and while the 24-year-old absolutely could stand to improve himself, there is no question that Chicago has not exactly helped Fields’ development.
The Bears have gone just 5-24 in Fields’ 29 starts since he entered the NFL as the 11th overall pick back in 2021, which is an indictment of the team as a whole rather than just Fields.
Through four games this season, Fields has totaled 861 yards, seven touchdowns and five picks while completing 60.5 percent of his throws and posting a passer rating of 86.8. His rushing numbers are way down from last year, as he has amassed just 134 yards on the ground in 2023.
That comes after a 2022 campaign in which the Ohio State product racked up 1,143 yards as a rusher. Many have lambasted the Bears for not letting Fields run more, as they have instead tried to turn him into a pocket passer.
Chicago is 0-4 and may very well end up with the No. 1 overall pick this spring. If it does, you can bet the Bears will be taking USC quarterback Caleb Williams, which would effectively end Fields’ tenure in the Windy City. That might be the best end result for both sides.
