The Atlanta Falcons don’t exactly have an enviable situation at quarterback, but they apparently don’t have a solution, either. At least not right now.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank spoke about the team’s conundrum under center this week, and his comments probably won’t do much to set the fans at ease.
While Blank acknowledged that the quarterback position is “something that needs work,” he also said that Atlanta isn’t really sure what it is going to do there just yet.
“I would tell you quite honestly: 1,000 percent, there’s not a defined plan, but it is being talked about,” Blank said, via Tori McElhaney of the Falcons’ official team website. “And it’ll be talked about pretty intensely — I would say — over the next coming weeks.”
Blank also said that he is very aware of the fact that the Falcons need to make a change.
“It’s very clear to everybody — all of our fans, all of you, anybody throughout the NFL — is that this is a position that we need to figure out how we’re going to get better in 2024 and beyond that as well, whether that be trades, free agency, the draft, whatever it may be,” Blank said.
So, Blank knows that Atlanta can’t go into next season with Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke as its two main signal-callers, but he isn’t sure which avenue to pursue.
The Falcons own the eighth overall pick of the NFL Draft this spring, meaning they won’t have a chance of taking USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye (barring a trade, of course). They may end up having the opportunity to select LSU’s Jayden Daniels, but even that seems unlikely.
Atlanta may very well have to solve its issue at quarterback by swinging a trade or making a free-agent signing, although neither of those scenarios are easy.
We’ll see what the Falcons decide to do in the coming weeks and months, but one thing is for sure: if they don’t remedy this problem, they will likely miss the playoffs yet again.
