This week, a report surfaced that the Baltimore Ravens reached out to the San Francisco 49ers to inquire about the availability of wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
On Thursday, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said that did not happen.
Emphatically, as a matter of fact.
“That specific report — I read The Lorax last week at a local elementary school. I would probably put that report similar to that,” DeCosta said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
So, essentially, DeCosta is saying that the report was every bit as fictional as a Dr. Seuss book.
Baltimore did enter the offseason in need of help at wide receiver. Behind Zay Flowers, the Ravens don’t really have all that much at the position, as Odell Beckham Jr. is a free agent and Rashod Bateman is rapidly approaching bust territory.
But apparently, Baltimore did not call the 49ers about Samuel.
It does make you wonder what the Ravens are going to do at receiver, though.
Baltimore still has about $10 million remaining in cap space, so, in theory, the Ravens could still add a very capable wide out via free agency. There are some decent names still available, too. Mike Williams, Tyler Boyd and K.J. Osborn, to name a few. There is also Marquise Brown, but he already played for Baltimore and requested a trade from the Ravens a few years ago, so that probably won’t happen.
It became patently obvious during Baltimore’s listless offensive performance in its AFC Championship Game loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this past January that the team needs more weapons.
The Ravens did address their backfield, signing four-time Pro Bowl running back Derrick Henry. However, they still have not added any weapons in the passing game for Lamar Jackson.
It doesn’t have to be Deebo Samuel, but Baltimore should do something.
