The Chicago Bears have had a very interesting offseason thus far with the addition of quarterback Andy Dalton being one of the most head-scratching moves. Now, they need to focus on improving their roster in the 2021 NFL Draft, but there are still some free agents available they could consider. One of those free agents is veteran cornerback Bashaud Breeland.
Breeland is a very solid veteran cornerback who deserves to find a new team in the near future. He is coming off of another good season with the Kansas City Chiefs and would be a big addition for the Bears.
An NFL executive who spoke to NFL Analysis Network believes that the Bears could look to sign him late in free agency.
“The Bears are still interested in adding some help for their secondary. There aren’t a ton of options in free agency, but one name that has come up is Bashaud Breeland. Chicago likes him and it wouldn’t be shocking if they choose to make a move to sign him.”
During the 2020 season with the Chiefs, Breeland ended up recording 38 total tackles to go along with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, and nine defended passes. He was able to accumulate those numbers in just 11 games. Obviously, he can still make a major impact.
If the Bears want to compete in the NFC North, they need to improve their secondary. Going up against Aaron Rodgers is never an easy task and Chicago also has to face Kirk Cousins and Jared Goff. None of those matchups are going to be easy with a porous defense.
At 29 years of age, it is a little surprising that Bashaud Breeland hasn’t found a new team yet. He is a quality player who has made every team he has been with better. If the Bears truly do want to improve their defense and add a cornerback, Breeland would be the move to make.
Chicago does not want to continue their ways of mediocrity. Making the playoffs and losing in the first-round isn’t something they’re interested in continuing.
Expect to see the Bears look to make more improvements to their roster before the offseason is over. Breeland may not end up being signed, but he would make a ton of sense.
