The Washington Commanders have selected LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft, to no one’s surprise.

Daniels climbed draft boards over the last several weeks and moved ahead of North Carolina’s Drake Maye as the No. 2 signal-caller in this year’s draft class.

The 23-year-old dual threat has drawn comparisons to Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson, and a former NFL executive tells the NFL Analysis Network that the comparisons are appropriate. He even took it a step further.

“The comparisons to Lamar Jackson are 100 percent accurate,” said the exec. “However, I think he’s better than Lamar. His arm talent is better. I’m going to say it now, Jayden is going to be a better NFL quarterback than Lamar.”

Daniels is coming off of a fantastic 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 72.2 percent of his passes. He also racked up 1,134 yards and 10 scores on the ground, averaging an incredible 8.4 yards per carry. He won the Heisman Trophy for his efforts.

The San Bernadino, Ca. native began his collegiate career at Arizona State in 2019 and spent three years there before transferring to LSU in 2022.

Daniels had a decent first year with the Tigers, but he didn’t break out until this past season.

He will be joining a Commanders franchise that is in desperate need for a quarterback. Washington traded Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks last month. It signed Marcus Mariota, but it was clear that the Commanders needed a signal-caller for the future.

We’ll see if Jayden Daniels can deliver in the nation’s capital.
