The Chicago Bears look to have hit rock bottom heading into their Week 5 matchup with the Washington Commanders. A national audience will now see how much of a mess they have become as they are set to kick the week off on Thursday Night Football.
This is a big game for the Bears, as some major changes could be on the horizon should they lose the game. There have been rumors floating around that head coach Matt Eberflus could be fired if the team loses again.
Despite being in only Year 2 as head coach, hearing his job is on the line isn’t all too surprising. As shared by ESPN Stats & Info on X, formerly known as Twitter, they are in the midst of franchise-record ineptitude.
If the Bears lose tonight to the Commanders, it will drop their record to 0-5. It would be the first time they have started a season off so poorly since 1997. A loss would also extend their franchise-record 14-game losing streak to 15.
Chicago lost the last 10 games of the 2022 season and has yet to get into the win column this season. Their struggles have led to some NFL firsts occurring already this season, as their matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs was a historic one, but they were on the bad side of all of it.
Last week, quarterback Justin Fields had the best game of his career, as he helped the team open up a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter. But, everything unraveled as he fumbled once, which the Denver Broncos returned for a touchdown. An interception on the team’s final drive of the game iced the loss.
While Fields won’t be replaced midseason as Eberflus sounds like he will, these games are still very important for him. With a 5-24 career record, the Bears have done very little to help him develop. But, every time that he steps on the field he is auditioning for a job elsewhere as a full-blown teardown and rebuild should be on the horizon in the Windy City.
