Bill Belichick, the esteemed former head coach of the New England Patriots, seems to be exercising caution in choosing his next role in the NFL.

After ending his 24-year tenure with the Patriots in January, Belichick was initially considered a top contender for several head coaching positions across the league. However, as most of these positions have been filled, Belichick remains without a team.

With the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks still searching for head coaches, this year might mark the first NFL season without Belichick since 1974.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reports that Belichick is using the current situation as motivation but prioritizes securing a role that’s the right fit for him. According to sources close to Belichick, he prefers to be without a job rather than take on one that doesn’t align with his vision.

“Those familiar with Belichick’s thinking relay that he believes having no job is a better result than a job that wasn’t the right fit,” reported Reiss. “So it seems safe to say he’ll be motivated to find the right one in the future.”

Belichick, having undergone two interview rounds, was a strong candidate for the Atlanta Falcons head coach job. Yet, the Falcons ultimately chose Raheem Morris. Belichick’s insistence on total control, similar to what he enjoyed with the Patriots, likely influenced this decision.

The Dallas Cowboys emerged as a potential option for Belichick, especially following their Wild Card Round exit and subsequent calls for replacing head coach Mike McCarthy. Although Cowboys owner Jerry Jones retained McCarthy, the possibility of Belichick joining a team like the Cowboys in the future remains, particularly if they encounter similar setbacks next season.
