With Bill Belichick out as New England Patriots head coach, could he end up making his way to the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason? Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports thinks it’s a possibility.
Cowherd acknowledges that the Eagles’ head-coaching job is currently not open, as Nick Sirianni is in place at the moment. However, Philadelphia lost five of its last six games to end the regular season, with Sirianni making some questionable decisions. If Philly ends up losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs on Monday, it could open the door to a coaching change.
“Strong ownership, excellent personnel guy, what they need is somebody to shore up their linebackers and secondary,” Cowherd said of the Eagles. “That’s literally Bill Belichick’s forte.”
Cowherd adds that he feels Sirianni may be a bit overwhelmed in Philadelphia.
“Nick Sirianni, between his sort of juvenile sideline antics and theatrics, his anxiety at the podium, and the complete erosion of the Eagles’ offense — and he’s an offensive-minded guy — it appears that Nick Sirianni’s a bit over his skis,” Cowherd said.
Sirianni is now in his third season as head coach of the Eagles, and last year, he led the team to a Super Bowl appearance. But there is no doubt that he has lost some of his luster this season, and with Belichick now available, it would not come as a complete shock if Philadelphia decided to explore that option.
The Eagles would make sense for Belichick, as they are a team that is ready to win now and one with a franchise quarterback already in place. Jalen Hurts and Co. would certainly represent a massive step up from the Mac Jones-led Patriots from the past couple of seasons.
Of course, Belichick would also probably want significant control over personnel decisions, which would mean he would be stepping on the toes of long-time Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.
We’ll see if Bill Belichick ends up being a realistic option for Philadelphia this offseason.
