There has been a lot of recent chatter about wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk potentially playing his final days with the San Francisco 49ers, and for good reason.
Aiyuk is entering the final year of his rookie deal, as the 49ers exercised his fifth-year option for 2024. However, after that, he is set to hit free agency.
The problem is that San Francisco has some serious financial constraints that could possibly prevent the club from signing Aiyuk to a long-term deal.
On Tuesday, just two days after the Niners’ devastating Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Aiyuk was asked about whether or not he wanted to remain with the 49ers, and his answer may be construed as concerning to some fans in the Bay Area.
“If that’s the right move, yeah,” Aiyuk said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
And what would make that the right move?
“Being a champion,” answered Aiyuk.
So, essentially, Aiyuk needs to win a Super Bowl with San Francisco next season in order to agree to any sort of hometown discount that the Niners may offer him.
Of course, it’s entirely possible the 25-year-old is still feeling the effects of the Super Bowl, as he called it the toughest loss he has ever experienced.
Perhaps Aiyuk simply needs to clear his head.
The Arizona State product enjoyed a tremendous 2023 campaign, hauling in 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.
We’ll see if the 49ers approach Brandon Aiyuk with any sort of negotiations for an extension this offseason.
