Jacksonville Jaguars Make Final Decision On Mac Jones’ Future

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a significant move this offseason, acquiring Mac Jones in exchange for a late-round draft pick.

While they anticipate his role as their backup quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season, they’re hesitant to make any long-term commitments.

In line with expectations, the Jaguars have opted not to exercise the fifth-year option on Jones’ rookie contract. This decision underscores a prudent approach, as picking up the option would have mandated a fully guaranteed salary for the 2025 season—a move deemed unwise by the team.

Jacksonville’s aspiration for the upcoming season revolves around Jones becoming a dependable backup for Trevor Lawrence, the team’s starting quarterback.

Jones showcased remarkable potential during his rookie stint with the New England Patriots, boasting a completion rate of 67.6 percent and accumulating 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. However, his performance has wavered since then, particularly in protecting the football.

Over the past two seasons, Jones has tallied 24 touchdown passes juxtaposed with 23 interceptions, falling short of the standards expected of a starting quarterback.

Perhaps a change of scenery will reignite Mac Jones’ previous form from 2021.

At the very least, this move to the Jacksonville Jaguars offers him an opportunity to reset his career trajectory and distance himself from the impediments that hindered his progress in New England.
