The Denver Broncos got back into the win column in Week 7 with a victory over the Green Bay Packers. It wasn’t a pretty game, by any means, but it counts all the same for a team that snapped their two-game losing streak and won their second game of the season.

Russell Wilson and the much-maligned offense did just enough to get the win, as he completed 20-of-29 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. The team also totaled 145 yards on the ground, taking advantage of a porous Green Bay run defense.

Despite the victory, however, there were some heated moments during the game that went viral. Miscommunications on the sideline led to disagreements between players and coaches, causing the Broncos to call timeouts at inopportune times.

During his post-game press conference, head coach Sean Payton voiced his frustrations with what happened. In the process, he threw his defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph, under the bus for the miscues.

“Don’t get me started. That needs to be cleaner, this is the NFL and it shouldn’t happen,” Payton told reporters. “We get caught burning timeouts twice with substitution changes and we need to get that corrected.” (H/T A to Z Sports)

Given how competitive the game was, Payton has a right to be irked at the team burning timeouts when those issues could have been easily avoided. Add that to the evergrowing list of why Joseph will be lucky to remain on the staff in 2024, let alone make it through the remainder of the 2023 season.

After having one of the best defenses in the NFL during the 2022 season, things have gone awry for the Broncos in 2023 on that side of the ball. Denver is second to last in points allowed and last in yardage surrendered this season, a far cry from the 14th and seventh-place finishes they had last season.

Joseph is squarely on the hot seat, as the Broncos defense has been a big reason for their current 2-5 record. But, things look like they could be turning around as Denver has surrendered fewer than 20 points in their last two games. If they can keep up that level of performance, the wins will start piling up.
