In a recent article, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were talked about as a team that could make a big splash with a quarterback change away from Baker Mayfield.
It has been a tough season in 2023 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a strong start to the season, the Buccaneers have started to struggle of late, and are looking now like the rebuilding team that many thought they would be at the beginning of the season.
After starting the season 3-1, the Buccaneers are now 4-7. However, in the awful NFC South, they are still very much alive to win the division. While many thought that the quarterback position would be an issue for the Buccaneers this season, Baker Mayfield has likely exceeded expectations in Tampa.
This season, Mayfield has totaled 2,588 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Despite Mayfield playing fairly well this season, a recent article said that the Buccaneers might look to make a major change at quarterback.
Dane Brugler, The Athletic’s draft analyst, wrote of Daniels:
“Offensively and defensively, the Buccaneers are a middle-of-the-road team, and they’ll have several interesting roster decisions to make this offseason. For one, Tampa Bay will be in the mix to select this draft’s QB3, and Daniels could be it. He has a dynamic skill set to create explosive plays with his arm and legs.”
Daniels is certainly an interesting prospect to consider for the Buccaneers at quarterback if they believe he can be the next franchise player. However, this appears to be a team that has more issues than just at quarterback.
At LSU this season, Daniels has totaled 3,812 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. After a great season, Daniels is rising up draft boards and could be there when the Buccaneers are on the clock.
For the franchise, finding a great quarterback would be great, but they shouldn’t rule out the possibility of sticking with Mayfield for a bit longer. As we head into the stretch run, it will be interesting to see how Baker’s performance could impact the Bucs’ plans.
