One could argue that the Buffalo Bills saved their season with their blowout victory over the New York Jets this past Sunday, but they still have a long road ahead of them.
The Bills will have to battle the NFL-best Philadelphia Eagles this weekend, and while it will certainly be a difficult task, assistant head coach Eric Washington is looking forward to the challenge.
“Every week in the National Football League is challenging and this is the next challenge for us,” Washington said, via Sports Illustrated. “Certainly, we’re gonna need a great week of practice, we’re gonna really need to do our homework as a staff and present it to the players with a concise, clear plan of attack that doesn’t drift away from our core identity.”
Buffalo is just 6-5 on the season and has been one of the league’s most disappointing teams this year. The Bills entered the year with Super Bowl aspirations, but a lack of consistency has moved them further and further away from their ultimate goal.
The good news is that Buffalo still has time to get back on track, and Washington thinks the Eagles will present a great opportunity for the club to do just that.
“Execution is gonna be huge and we’re gonna have to be just as opportunistic in that environment as we were [Sunday],” Washington said. “Those things give you a chance. I know they’re going to be stingy, they take care of the ball extremely well, and we’re gonna have to go and force some opportunities for themselves. … I’m excited about the challenge and I know our players will be also.”
Prior to beating the Jets, the Bills had lost two straight games, including a heartbreaking loss on a last-second field goal against the Denver Broncos in Week 10.
Buffalo now sits a game-and-a-half behind the Miami Dolphins for first place in the AFC East (two in the loss column).
