What the Chicago Bears decide to do with their quarterback position in 2024 will change the landscape of the NFL. Whether they keep the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft or trade it, multiple teams will be impacted.
If the Bears opt to trade the pick and build around Justin Fields, another franchise will trade up to acquire the No. 1 pick and have their new franchise quarterback of the future. If general manager Ryan Poles opts to hold onto the selection, Fields will be starting somewhere else in 2024.
While everyone has an opinion on what the Bears could do, no indication has been given which direction they are leaning with. But, their new quarterbacks coach could have provided a hint at the direction the team will go in.
NFL News & Rumors: Kerry Joseph, Justin Fields, 2024 NFL Draft, Chicago Bears Updates
Kerry Joseph is spending the week in Mobile, Alabama as coach of the American Team in the Senior Bowl. In his first comments since taking over the role in Chicago, Joseph revealed what he is looking for in a quarterback.
“Arm talent, accuracy, you know. Delivery quickness, physicality, toughness, swagger. You got to have a little swag playing the quarterback position, and when I say that, I mean confidence,” Joseph said, via Nicholas Moreano of CHGO Sports. “You got to have confidence, and I like to say arrogance, but arrogance to me, all it’s is confidence under control.”
Based on those comments, it is hard to get a read on where Joseph stands with the Bears’ quarterback conundrum. Fields certainly has arm talent and confidence, but the accuracy hasn’t always been there.
However, when making another comment to The Athletic, it would seem that Joseph would lean toward moving on from Fields. Three of the attributes he is looking for could be categorized as weaknesses for the current Bears’ starting quarterback.
“Decision, timing and accuracy. Simple. Gotta make the right decisions, gotta be on time, gotta be accurate.”
NFL News & Rumors: Kerry Joseph, Justin Fields, 2024 NFL Draft, Chicago Bears Updates
Since entering the NFL, Fields has had a tendency to hold onto the ball, trying to create something out of nothing. While that has sometimes led to heroic plays, it has also resulted in negative plays for the team, as he needs to process things quicker and make faster decisions with the ball.
That is something Joseph could certainly help Fields with if they are going to work together in 2024 and beyond. However, many analysts believe the Bears won’t trade the No. 1 pick two straight years and will select a new quarterback in April.
