The Green Bay Packers have been surprisingly active in the free agency market, and despite their recent signings, there’s still speculation about further acquisitions, particularly regarding veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who is 33 years old.

Cem Yolbulan of Dairyland Express recently highlighted some remaining free agents who could fit well with the Packers, notably emphasizing players with Super Bowl-winning experience like offensive tackle Donovan Smith and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Among these options, Gilmore stands out as the most intriguing prospect according to Yolbulan, suggesting that a short-term contract could be mutually beneficial.

“A one-year veteran signing would do wonders for this team on the opposite side of Alexander. And Stephon Gilmore might be the best option available right now.”

While some Packers fans might find the idea of pursuing Gilmore unexpected, it’s worth recalling that General Manager Brian Gutekunst previously showed interest in the former Defensive Player of the Year back in 2021.

When rumors swirled about Gilmore’s potential release from the New England Patriots in 2021, he openly expressed his desire to join the Packers. However, due to salary cap limitations, Green Bay couldn’t secure a deal, leading to Gilmore being traded to the Carolina Panthers for a sixth-round pick.

Since then, Gilmore has had stints with multiple teams, including the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 and a subsequent trade to the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite his impressive track record, Gilmore remains unsigned in the current free agency period, which has been ongoing for nearly a month. His accolades speak for themselves, boasting a Super Bowl victory, two first-team All-Pro selections, five Pro Bowl appearances, and the prestigious Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019.

While Gilmore’s peak performance may be behind him at 33 years old, he still offers valuable veteran leadership, especially in a Packers locker room dominated by young and relatively inexperienced players at the cornerback position, with the exception of Jaire Alexander.

Considering Gilmore’s credentials and the potential impact he could have on bolstering the secondary, the Green Bay Packers should seriously consider pursuing this opportunity to elevate their defensive unit to the next level.
