The Oregon Ducks are experiencing significant changes within their coaching staff just as the spring football season is about to resume. Running backs coach Carlos Locklyn has departed Eugene for a new opportunity elsewhere.
According to a source familiar with the situation, Locklyn will be joining the Ohio State Buckeyes as their new running backs coach. During his two-year tenure with the Ducks, Locklyn played a pivotal role in the development of notable players such as Bucky Irving, Noah Whittington, and Jordan James.
The news of Locklyn’s move was first reported by both 247Sports and ESPN earlier on Monday.
Interestingly, Locklyn had recently signed a contract extension with the Ducks, intending to stay in Eugene until 2026. However, the allure of a new opportunity at Ohio State, coupled with an improved salary package, prompted Locklyn to make the switch.
Locklyn’s decision to join the Buckeyes comes as Ohio State’s previous running backs coach, Tony Alford, departed to take on the role of run-game coordinator for rival team Michigan Wolverines. Alford’s move left a vacancy at Ohio State, which Locklyn will now fill.
Despite the Ducks’ anticipation of having one of the nation’s most talented groups of running backs this season, including James, Whittington, Jayden Limar, and Jay Harris, Locklyn’s departure leaves a void.
However, his new role at Ohio State presents a promising opportunity. The Buckeyes boast a formidable roster of running backs, including standout transfer Quinshon Judkins from Ole Miss, along with talents like TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams.
As the Ducks move forward, attention will turn to how head coach Dan Lanning addresses the vacancy left by Locklyn. With spring ball set to resume on Tuesday, Oregon will likely seek a swift resolution to fill the coaching position.
