The Las Vegas Raiders are poised to secure their future franchise quarterback in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Following the departure of Jimmy Garoppolo and the signing of Gardner Minshew to a lucrative two-year deal worth $25 million, the 27-year-old Minshew may serve as a transitional figure while the Raiders groom their quarterback of choice, potentially as early as the 24th overall pick in this month’s draft.
According to CBS Sports’ latest mock draft by former NFL general manager Rick Spielman, the Raiders are projected to select Michael Penix Jr. from the University of Washington in the first round, following a trade back with the Dallas Cowboys.
Penix Jr., a Heisman Trophy finalist, showcased his prowess during the 2023 season, guiding the Huskies to a College Football Playoff berth and a National Championship Game appearance.
Spielman dropped some intel on why the Raiders should target Penix Jr.
“He is the best-deep ball throwing in this year’s draft class. Very experienced, six-year player. … I have Davante Adams, and now I’ve got a quarterback that can actually get the ball 30-plus down the field to him? This was a no-brainer for me.”
During his standout collegiate campaign, Penix Jr. amassed impressive statistics, passing for 4,903 yards with 36 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. Additionally, he displayed agility and mobility by rushing for three touchdowns.
With the Las Vegas Raiders aiming for stability at the quarterback position for the long haul, Penix Jr. emerges as a promising prospect, particularly if he is given time to develop without being thrust into immediate action.
