During this offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made significant moves in their wide receiver corps, parting ways with their top performer, Diontae Johnson, and bringing in three seasoned veterans to fill the void.
However, the acquisitions of Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins may not necessarily peg them as immediate starters within the team’s offensive lineup.
Similarly, while Cordarrelle Patterson brings versatility as a running back and kick returner, his role as a primary wide receiver remains uncertain.
Although the free-agent market for wide receivers has somewhat dwindled since the onset of free agency, there are still notable names available who could potentially make an impact on the Steelers’ revamped offensive unit.
While many eyes are on former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd, Pro Football Network has pinpointed another receiver as the ideal fit for the Steelers: former Dallas Cowboys pass catcher Michael Gallup.
“Michael Gallup hasn’t been the same player since tearing his ACL in 2022 but has a 1,000-yard campaign (2019) on his ledger. The 6’1″, 200-pounder can give the Steelers more size on the perimeter and wouldn’t prevent them from drafting an early-round WR. Gallup has drawn free agent interest from the Panthers and Ravens since being released by the Dallas Cowboys in early March.”
Given the current landscape, it appears to be a choice between Boyd or no one for the Steelers. The preference leans towards drafting a promising player in the second or third round of the upcoming 2024 NFL draft, rather than taking a gamble on a player who may have lost some of their edge post-ACL injury.
It will be interesting to see what the rest of the offseason has in store for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
