The New England Patriots are in dire need of a franchise quarterback, and with significant salary cap space at their disposal, one NFL analyst proposes an intriguing solution.

According to FS1’s Nick Wright, the Patriots could pursue a trade for Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

While this idea may seem far-fetched at the moment, Wright lays out a scenario where the Patriots could acquire Prescott in 2025, following the expiration of his four-year, $160 million contract with the Cowboys.

Reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport indicate that there are no plans for Prescott to renew his deal with the Cowboys in 2025, opening the door for potential suitors like the Patriots.

With the third overall pick in the upcoming draft, the Patriots have leverage to explore trade options while also keeping Prescott as a backup plan for 2025.

Wright delves into the Patriots’ financial situation for the next year and illustrates how a strategic trade could pave the way for signing Prescott down the line.

“So the Patriots are on the books for $200 million in cap space next year. So what if the Patriots … traded the pick a three particularly if Drake Maye‘s there because people want it even more because people seem to love him. Say he’s traded to Minnesota for [pick] 11 and 23 and something [else]. Draft a tackle there whether it’s [Joe] Alt  [Tallese] Fuaga [and] draft one of the mini stud wide receivers in this class at 23 and have the ‘Plan B’ — ‘we’re going to sign Dak Prescott.’”

In Wright’s view, the Patriots should adopt a patient approach rather than rushing into drafting a QB this season, banking on the possibility of securing Prescott’s services post-2024.

Prescott, a former fourth-round pick from Mississippi State in 2016, quickly ascended to stardom with the Cowboys, earning three Pro Bowl nods and guiding the team to five playoff appearances.

Throughout his career, Prescott has amassed impressive statistics, tallying 29,459 passing yards and 202 touchdowns against 74 interceptions. Despite a solid regular season record of 73-41, his playoff performance stands at 2-5.

The question now remains whether new head coach Jerod Mayo and the New England Patriots’ leadership are willing to take a long-term approach, placing their bets on Prescott’s potential availability after 2024.
