The Chicago Bears are just 1-5 on the season and appear headed for some significant roster retooling in the spring. They could look to swing an intriguing trade with the San Francisco 49ers before the deadline.
Because the Bears are clearly not competing for anything this year, they may end up selling off some pieces between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline in order to acquire some more assets to use in the offseason.
One of the most intriguing names on Chicago’s roster is cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
Johnson is just 24 years old, but he is set to hit free agency after the season, and given how many needs the Bears have up and down their roster, they may possess the financial means to retain him.
As a result, trade speculation has been swirling around Johnson, and Mike Santa Barbara of Yardbarker sees a perfect fit: the San Francisco 49ers.
While cornerback isn’t a pressing need for the 49ers (does San Francisco really have any pressing needs?), they could certainly stand to improve at the position, and as Santa Barbara notes, the Niners have been aggressive at the trade deadline in the past.
Johnson may not be elite, but he is very solid when healthy and has been a steady contributor for the Bears ever since the team selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Of course, being healthy is the catch for Johnson.
The University of Utah product has never played a full season and has already missed a couple of games this year due to a hamstring injury. He also missed six contests in 2022.
However, when he is on the field, Johnson is good, and he would certainly a better a 49ers’ pass defense that has been good but not great this season (San Francisco currently ranks 10th in the NFL in that category).
The Niners are 5-1 on the year.
