The Cleveland Browns restructured running back Nick Chubb’s contract this week, resulting in Chubb taking a major paycut.

Chubb was originally slated to earn a base salary of $11.8 million in 2024, but after the restructure, he will now be making $2.3 million.

The catch is that the deal is laced with incentives, so technically, Chubb can make all of that money back, but it’s obviously a significant reworking of his contract regardless.

That comes after Chubb suffered a devastating knee injury in Week 2 of last season. He had to undergo multiple surgeries, and his status for early next season remains in question.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry recently spoke about Chubb and applauded his professionalism throughout the process.

“I won’t comment in detail on the contract, other than to say that I think that whenever you go through a situation like that, I think people think it’s easy for a club and agent to be adversarial. And with Nick’s situation, I really applaud Nick and then his reps, Todd France and A.J. Stevens for being really collaborative partners and finding a solution that worked for everybody,” Berry said, via Cleveland’s official YouTube account. “I think everybody in this room is happy that Nick is back as a Cleveland Brown and we’re very optimistic that he’s going to crush the rehab.”

Chubb, who played his collegiate football at the University of Georgia, was selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The 28-year-old enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign, rushing for 996 yards and eight touchdowns. He then proceeded to post four straight 1,000-yard seasons between 2019 and 2022, topping out at 1,525 yards in the latter year. He made the Pro Bowl all four times and also averaged at least five yards per carry each season.

Nick Chubb has obviously been an integral piece of Cleveland’s offense for quite some time, so hopefully, he is able to make a full recovery and contribute in some form or fashion in 2024.
