The Pittsburgh Steelers could use some extra depth in their secondary, and Noah Strackbein of All Steelers has proposed an interesting target for them.
Cincinnati Bengals safety Dax Hill.
“The Steelers need a slot cornerback. Hill provides that with plenty of upside and likely wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg due to his decreased role in Cincinnati,” wrote Strackbein. “If he’s looking for an opportunity and the Bengals are looking for cost before realizing they don’t have a place for him, why wouldn’t a trade work?”
Hill is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played every game and registered 110 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a couple of interceptions and 11 passes defended.
While those numbers look impressive on the surface, the Bengals clearly were not satisfied with his production, which was why they signed fellow safeties Geno Stone and Vonn Bell in free agency.
As Strackbein notes, this will result in a diminished role for Hill, who was originally selected by Cincinnati with the 31st overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
That could make him expendable, and with the Steelers needing another defensive back, it could cause the two AFC North rivals to become trade partners.
But would Cincy really want to help out Pittsburgh?
If the deal is mutually beneficial, maybe. The Bengals’ decision would obviously depend on the compensation coming back from the Steelers, and Cincinnati would probably ask for more from Pittsburgh than it would from a team that does not play within its division.
Strackbein proposes that the Steelers could offer a third-round draft pick or a Day 3 selection to the Bengals in exchange for Hill. Pittsburgh picked up an extra third-rounder when it dealt Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles last month, so it has some extra draft capital at its disposal.
