The Cleveland Browns clinched a playoff spot after hammering the New York Jets by a score of 37-20 on Thursday night, making history in the process.
Now that the Browns have punched their ticket to the postseason, they have become the first team in NFL history to make the playoffs after starting four different quarterbacks in the same year (h/t Adam Schefter of ESPN).
Cleveland has trotted out Deshaun Watson, P.J. Walker, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and, finally, Joe Flacco this season.
The Browns signed Flacco to their practice squad in late November, and he ended up becoming their starting signal-caller during the stretch run.
Flacco has gone 4-1 under center for Cleveland, throwing for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 60.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 90.2.
Against the Jets, Flacco went 19-for-29 with 309 yards, three touchdowns and a pick.
Flacco, who played his collegiate football at the University of Delaware, was originally selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 18th overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft.
He spent the first 11 years of his career with the Ravens, leading the club to a Super Bowl championship during the 2012-13 campaign.
Flacco’s tenure in Baltimore came to an end in 2018 when he lost his starting job to Lamar Jackson midway through the season.
After his time with the Ravens, the 38-year-old linked up with the Denver Broncos for one year before joining the Jets, where he would go on to spend the next three seasons.
Flacco was then without a team for the first two-and-a-half months of the 2023 campaign before finally landing with the Browns.
Cleveland improved to 11-5 with its victory over New York and has won four straight games. It will take on the Cincinnati Bengals to wrap up the regular season on Jan. 7.
This represents just he Browns’ second playoff appearance since 2003.
