This Colts-Bears Trade Sends Justin Fields To Indianapolis

There have been a lot of discussions about the future of Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. The Bears traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft with the New York Giants to select the Ohio State product 11th overall. But, that was the old regime that made that move as general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy were replaced during the 2022 offseason.

Taking over their roles were Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus. The first season of the new brain trust was a difficult one as the Bears went 3-14, landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. One of the few bright spots from the season, however, was the performance of Justin Fields.

While there is still plenty of room to grow, especially as a passer, Justin Fields did make strides during his second season in the NFL. He looked more comfortable running an offense, showcasing improvements in the passing game and just how special of a talent he can be with the ball in his hands.

In 15 games, Justin Fields gained 1,143 rushing yards on 160 carries, scoring eight touchdowns. He fell just short of Lamar Jackson’s single-season rushing record for a quarterback and looks like he has a bright future in the Windy City.

However, some rumors are floating around that the Bears could still opt to trade Justin Fields this offseason. Nothing has been ruled out, but Poles did say that would need to be blown away in order to select a quarterback first overall.

Executives around the league believe that will ultimately be the course of action that the Bears choose. If that is the case, what does that mean for Justin Fields? A trade would ensue and he should have a sizable market.

Looking to address the quarterback position themselves, the Indianapolis Colts should get involved. They can expedite their quarterback development process by offering the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Bears in exchange for Justin Fields. If they want to hold onto that selection for themselves, they can offer their second-round picks in 2023 and 2024.

Some people may see this as a short-sighted move by the Colts, as they would be losing two years off of a rookie contract for a quarterback. But, with so many teams eying a move up the board, there is no guarantee they will have the chance to select the prospect that they want.

Debates will rage on about whether Justin Fields is a better prospect than the players available in this year’s draft class, but Indianapolis would be a great landing spot for him. They just hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who worked wonders with Jalen Hurts this season.

Justin Fields has a similar skill set to Hurts and would benefit greatly from playing under a coach that has experience working with and getting the most out of a quarterback with that style of play. Pairing Steichen up with him could be the home run that the Colts have been seeking at the quarterback position.
