The Indianapolis Colts are hopeful that they set the franchise on the right path for years to come during the 2023 NFL Draft. With the No. 4 overall pick, the Colts selected quarterback Anthony Richardson out of Florida.
Richardson is regarded as a raw prospect that needs some time to develop, but the tools are there for him to become something special. The combination of size and athleticism that he possesses has never been seen before as he was setting records at the NFL Combine during some of the drills.
There may not have been a better landing spot for Richardson than with the Colts. Their new head coach, Shane Steichen, had a hand in developing Jalen Hurts, another player who was highly regarded for his rushing ability.
Steichen helped mold him into an MVP candidate and the Colts are hopeful that he can do the same with Richardson. At least one teammate believes that he will, as wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. made a bold comment about his new rookie quarterback.
“I just can’t see him not being successful,” Pittman said, per PFF, in regard to Richardson.
Pittman is one of the weapons that the Colts have around Richardson to help him succeed. They also have Alec Pierce from the 2022 NFL Draft and selected Josh Downs out of North Carolina in the 2023 NFL Draft.
If they can figure out things with running back Jonathan Taylor, Richardson will have the necessary pieces around him to succeed right away. Reliable pass catchers and a strong running game are key to a young quarterback developing and the Colts have both.
While it will take Richardson some time to realize his potential, he should have an impact from Day 1 even if he isn’t the starter. At the very least, the Colts will have packages in place for him to get on the field, taking advantage of his skill set as a runner and creating mismatches to take advantage of.
