The No. 1 goal for the Washington Commanders this offseason is to figure out what they want to do at the quarterback position. Whether they decide that Sam Howell is their guy or they look to bring in a veteran with some more experience, a plan needs to be put in place.

After that, it is time to put that player in the best position possible to succeed. The Commanders have done a wonderful job upgrading the skill position groups in recent seasons as they have the pieces in place for a dangerous offense. A quarterback will bring it all together, but making some changes at tight end could also be needed.

Short on cap space with only $6.6 million to spend, Washington will have some work to do when it comes to restructuring contracts and freeing up cash. Releasing veteran quarterback Carson Wentz and tight end Logan Thomas would help them open up some space, which they could then use to upgrade the roster.

One player that makes for an intriguing target is tight end, Dalton Schultz. The Commanders have seen up close and personal the impact that Schultz can have on the game as he spent the first five seasons of his career with their NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

How sweet it would be to not only improve their roster but diminish the offensive attack of the Cowboys in the process. Schultz has developed into one of Dak Prescott’s most reliable and productive targets in recent seasons. His 57 receptions for 577 yards and five touchdowns were the least productive he has been since becoming a starter in 2020.

Adding a player of Schultz’s caliber to this passing offense would make the Commanders very hard to slow down. Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel are a dynamic trio at wide receiver; adding the big-bodied Schultz to work the middle of the field would make things even easier for them.

If the Commanders opt to stick with Howell, upgrading the weapons around him would make plenty of sense. But, if they decide to jump into the veteran quarterback market, Schultz likely wouldn’t be affordable.
