The Washington Commanders have already had a busy 2024 NFL offseason. With a new ownership group in place, sweeping changes were made to the front office and coaching staff when the 2023 season ended.
Head coach Ron Rivera was fired and replaced by Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Kliff Kingsbury was hired as the offensive coordinator under him. In the front office, Adam Peters was hired away from the San Francisco 49ers to become the team’s new general manager.
Former general manager Martin Mayhew has been reassigned within the organization according to John Kiem of ESPN. Part of the reason for that reassignment is that Washington has brought in Lance Newmark from the Detroit Lions to finalize their front-office personnel. Former executive vice president Marty Hurney will now serve in an advisory role as well.

“Lance is someone that I have known and respected in the scouting community my entire career,” Peters said in a statement. “He is a highly respected talent evaluator.”
On the field for the coaching staff, the Commanders have added former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn. Lynn will be the team’s run game coordinator and follows Peters from San Francisco, where he spent the last two seasons.
He will be tasked with getting an underwhelming Commanders’ running game on track. He actually interviewed for the offensive coordinator position last year, but Washington decided to hire Eric Bieniemy instead.
Lynn isn’t coming to the East Coast alone. Daryl Tapp, an assistant coach with the 49ers, is heading to the Commanders to become their defensive line coach. Washington is an organization that Tapp knows well as he played part of his 12-year career with the franchise.

Tom Donatell is being hired as the team’s defensive backs coach after spending three seasons under Brandon Staley with the Chargers. Donatell was the Chargers’ passing game coordinator and secondary coach in 2023.
Those are a lot of new faces in Washington, but a shake-up was needed. As the franchise looks to remove itself further from the Dan Synder era, wholesale changes were necessary and that is what has occurred over the last few weeks.
