Provide More Stability

Earlier in the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys took a chance on Aldon Smith despite him not appearing in an NFL game since 2015. He has been working hard to prepare to play at defensive end.

There is just less certainty that comes with having to rely on Smith to play a prominent role in the pass-rush department. With Everson Griffen now in the mix, the Cowboys will have more stability with Smith not having to set the tone quite as much.

Griffen will be able to start at right defensive end opposite of Demarcus Lawrence with Tyrone Crawford behind him on the depth chart. Meanwhile, Smith can fill in the gaps as a designated pass rusher.

The Cowboys will also no longer have to wait to find out what will happen with Randy Gregory’s attempt to be reinstated from the commissioner’s exempt list. Instead, they can count on Griffen to make an impact and wait for that situation to be resolved.
