Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy: “Michael Gallup is a No. 1 receiver”

The Dallas Cowboys head into the 2020 NFL season loaded with talent at the wide receiver position. The team added former Oklahoma standout CeeDee Lamb with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2020 NFL season to pair with the dynamic duo–Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.

For a head coach who emphasizes the passing game like the Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy, the thought of running an offense with such talent has to be nothing short of elating.

During a conversation with Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, McCarthy made it clear he views wideout Michael Gallup as a No. 1 receiver level talent.

”Let’s make it clear: Michael Gallup is a No. 1 receiver in my view,” McCarthy said.

Going a step further, McCarthy even stated his belief in the Cowboys’ top three receivers all having ‘that level of potential’ which includes Amari Cooper, who is the actual No. 1 receiver, along with Gallup and rookie CeeDee Lamb.

”I think we’re very fortunate to have three players with that level of potential to play at that level,” McCarthy said. “Now, the reality of it is everybody wants to live by numbers. It really comes down to opportunities. … I was so impressed with what Michael did on film last year. He was definitely one of the players that really jumped off the video during the offseason study because I didn’t know a whole lot about Michael.

Gallup is coming off an impressive season featuring totals of 66 catches for 1,107 yards, and six touchdowns. He played an integral in the Cowboys posting some of the NFL’s best passing production.

During the 2020 season, McCarthy expects Gallup to raise his game a step further and take another step forward in his development.

”He’s primed to take that next step. You look for your younger players in their second or third year to take that next step not only in their production but in their overall awareness, their football IQ, their emotional IQ, all those things. I think he will definitely be one of those players for us.”

Teams are going to have a difficult time matching up with the Cowboys’ passing attack, especially with Lamb moving around the field playing different roles. It only helps that Gallup may individually return as a better player after an offseason of hard work.

When factoring in that Dak Prescott is one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL making the throws to the receiver trio, it becomes all the more intriguing. Playing on a franchise tag, there’s a real chance he takes a step forward himself, too.

Additionally, the Cowboys have an elite running back to set the tone in Ezekiel Elliott with a talented offensive line. Opposing teams will have many facets of offense to have to account for without much for sufficient personnel to get it done.
