There is a lot of attention on the quarterback position for the Dallas Cowboys heading into the 2023 season. Dak Prescott struggled mightily last season when it came to turnovers, throwing 15 interceptions in the regular season despite playing in only 12 games.

In the postseason, those turnovers occurred again in the Divisional Round against the San Francisco 49ers. He threw two interceptions, hurting the team’s chances of pulling off the upset as they lost 19-12.

There are some people who believe that Prescott’s future with the Cowboys could be in danger if he struggles at all in 2023. That is hard to believe after the team won double-digit games in consecutive seasons for the first time since their dynasty in the 90s, but Jerry Jones is expecting more than regular season success and early playoff exits.

The talks around Prescott’s future with the franchise got even louder last week when the Cowboys acquired Trey Lance from the 49ers in a trade. The No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft had a disastrous tenure in San Francisco, as he fell behind Sam Darnold on the depth chart this offseason.

As the No. 3 quarterback, at best, the 49ers opted to trade him to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick. Many people believe his acquisition will put pressure on Prescott, but Cowboys legend Michael Irvin isn’t one of those people.

During a recent appearance on UNDISPUTED on FS1, Irvin shared his opinion on the quarterback situation for his former franchise. He doesn’t believe Lance is a threat to Prescott right now and that the team is in a perfect situation.

“Trey Lance puts the Cowboys in the PERFECT QB situation. He’s no threat to Dak, he’s a project QB,” Irvin said.

The No. 3 quarterback, which Lance will likely start the season out as, is the developmental, project quarterback in Irving’s opinion. With Cooper Rush on the roster as the backup and showing he is capable of keeping the team afloat with his performance last season, Irvin thinks the Cowboys are in a great spot.

The North Dakota State product will be afforded the chance to continue honing his craft and developing without the same pressure that existed with the 49ers. Eventually, he could take over as the team’s starter, but for now, Irving doesn’t believe Lance is a threat to taking Prescott’s place as the Cowboys starter.
