Dallas Cowboys Still Being Pushed To Sign Former Draft Bust

The Dallas Cowboys’ passive stance during the NFL free agency’s initial flurry prompted Team VP Stephen Jones to justify their approach, citing the tendency of teams to overspend in the early days.

Yet, despite this cautious strategy, the Cowboys have remained notably inactive in addressing their pressing needs at running back, receiver, linebacker, and defensive line.

The departure of key players from the offensive line, particularly Tyron Smith to the Jets and Tyler Biadasz to Washington, has left a significant void, accounting for 40% of the line’s composition. While the option exists to shift Tyler Smith to left tackle from left guard to compensate for Tyron Smith’s absence, Coach Mike McCarthy has indicated a preference to retain Smith in his current position.

This leaves potential openings at tackle and center, with TJ Bass, Chuma Edoga, and Brock Hoffman vying for starting roles.

However, an alternative solution has emerged: the acquisition of former Jets first-round pick Mekhi Becton, as proposed by Bleacher Report in their recent article titled “1 Free Agent Still on the Market Who Can Help Each NFL Team in 2024.”

“Right now, Tyler Smith is projected to make the switch from left guard to left tackle but signing Becton could keep the All-Pro at his best position. Even if Dallas wants to leave Smith on the edge, the former Jet has experience playing right tackle after making a couple of starts there last season and dating back to his college days at Louisville.”

Becton’s versatility across multiple positions on the offensive line renders him an attractive option. While primarily a left tackle, he has demonstrated proficiency at right tackle in both collegiate and professional settings.

At only 24 years old, Becton presents an intriguing prospect for the Dallas Cowboys. With his potential to fill various roles on the offensive line and his relative youth, Becton could offer a valuable solution at a reasonable cost.

Pro Football Focus forecasts a modest one-year contract worth $5 million, reflecting the current market conditions. However, Becton’s market value, as estimated by Spotrac, stands notably higher at $12.9 million per year, suggesting the potential for a more substantial investment in a multi-year deal.
