Cowboys’ Executive Doesn’t Hold Back On Dak Prescott

Dak Prescott may have had a disappointing postseason showing, but that does not mean the Dallas Cowboys don’t still see him as their franchise quarterback.

When speaking about the possibility of handing Prescott a contract extension this offseason, executive vice president Stephen Jones said that keeping him long term is a priority.

“Our whole thing with Dak is him being a Cowboy,” Jones said, via Jon Machota and Alex Andrejev of The Athletic. “That’s all that’s on our mind.”

Prescott has one year remaining on his deal and is coming off of an MVP-caliber 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 36 passing touchdowns to go along with 4,516 yards and just nine interceptions. He completed 69.5 percent of his passes while posting a passer rating of 105.9.

Still, as much as Jones wants to retain Prescott for the long haul, he also understands that money is an issue.

“We’ve got ways to adjust his cap number for this season,” added Jones. “Obviously between Dak and Micah [Parsons] and CeeDee [Lamb], the salary cap is real for us. We want to do deals with all three of them. Do you get to do everything you want to do with the salary cap? I don’t think any team does. But we’re certainly going to be able to go out and go to work and get the things done that we feel like we need to get done to be successful.”

It would be surprising of the Cowboys didn’t come to some sort of agreement with Prescott. Maybe it won’t happen soon or even this offseason, but it’s hard to imagine Prescott playing for another team in 2025.

The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was selected by Dallas in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and has been the team’s starting quarterback ever since.

Dak Prescott has made three Pro Bowl appearances, and this past season, he finished second in MVP voting. As a team, the Cowboys went 12-5 and lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.
