The Dallas Cowboys have a massive showdown with the San Francisco 49ers on tap next Sunday in a game that could represent a potential playoff preview.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that his matchup will represent a barometer to see where his club stands after Week 5.

“They are, right now, probably the most likely team to go win the Super Bowl, but in order for them to get there, they have to go by us, hopefully two times if that’s the way it falls in the playoffs and we’re in the playoffs, of course,” Jones said Tuesday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “But the bottom line is you’re playing the best, you don’t need the game to tell you you’re playing the best, but you need the game to show you how you stack up against the best.”

Dallas has gotten off to a 3-1 start this season and was most recently seen routing the New England Patriots by a score of 38-3 this past weekend. It marked the worst loss that the Patriots have ever suffered under Bill Belichick.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are 4-0 and just thumped the Arizona Cardinals 35-16.

The Niners have beaten the Cowboys in each of the last two postseasons, knocking them out in the Wild Card Round two years ago and the Divisional Round last January.

Jones added that a win in San Francisco “would be inspiring” and said “this is the best I’ve felt about our offense this year.”

Dallas ranks 11th in the NFL in offensive yardage and is fourth in points per game. Meanwhile, the 49ers rank second in the former category and third in the latter.

This matchup could potentially determine who gets homefield between the two teams in a possible clash in January, so it’s certainly accurate to say that this game should feature a playoff atmosphere.
