The Detroit Lions could use another wide receiver alongside of Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Cincinnati Bengals star Tee Higgins could be available.
In the latest mock draft of Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright, Wright has the Lions trading the 29th overall pick to the Bengals in exchange for Higgins.
Higgins requested a trade last month after Cincinnati slapped a franchise tag on him, preventing him from reaching free agency.
The Bengals still have until the middle of July to reach a long-term deal with Higgins, but based on their current financial specs, it is going to be very difficult for Cincinnati to extend Higgins.
Cincy is already paying quarterback Joe Burrow $55 million annually, and it also has to worry about a new contract for fellow wide out Ja’Marr Chase, who became eligible for an extension this offseason.
The Bengals will likely prioritize Chase over Higgins, and it seems fairly doubtful that the club will want to pay two receivers big money.
Of course, Cincinnati does not have to trade Higgins. It is trying to win a Super Bowl next season, after all, so it can choose to play out 2024 with Higgins on the roster and then re-evaluate things next March.
But, Higgins can threaten not to sign his franchise tender and, in turn, sit out next season, so he may end up forcing the Bengals hands if things get really sticky.
The Lions lost Josh Reynolds to free agency, leaving Jameson Williams as the team’s No. 2 receiver behind St. Brown. Williams is a former first-round pick and is certainly talented, but he is very raw, and Detroit may want to add a more proven commodity alongside of St. Brown.
We’ll see if Detroit is able to find a match with Cincinnati on Tee Higgins in the coming weeks.
