Cowboys Named Top Destination For Star RB In Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys‘ rushing attack was a bit disappointing in 2023, so they could be major players in the running back market this offseason. That’s especially considering that Tony Pollard will be a free agent next month.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen sees a potential replacement for Pollard on the horizon: Josh Jacobs.

Jacobs is also set to hit free agency in the coming weeks, and the Las Vegas Raiders may not re-sign him after the rough year he had in 2023.

However, Bowen thinks that Jacobs would be a great fit in Dallas.

“The Cowboys could pivot to Jacobs,” wrote Bowen. “He has been a volume grinder for the Raiders, with the low pad level to finish runs and the quickness to make defenders miss. Jacobs, who led the NFL in rushing in 2022, could also be utilized as a receiving option for Dak Prescott on swings, screens, and unders.”

Injuries limited Jacobs to 13 games this past season, and during his time on the field, he rushed for 805 yards and six touchdowns while averaging a meager 3.5 yards per carry.

The good news is that Jacobs’ paltry 2023 numbers are not indicative of him as a player overall.

Let’s remember that in 2022, Jacobs racked up a league-leading 1,653 yards on the ground, adding 12 touchdowns while logging a robust 4.9 yards per attempt. Plus, he caught 53 passes for 400 yards.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Raiders with the 24th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Since then, Jacobs has achieved over 1,000 rushing yards three times, although efficiency has not always been his hallmark. He lays claim to a rather pedestrian career average of 4.2 yards per tote, but he did have two seasons where he registered just under five yards per carry.

We’ll see if the Cowboys do try and take a swing at Jacobs one free agency begins.
