Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has been trying to play coy when it comes to Russell Wilson, but everyone knows that the Broncos will be parting ways with Wilson sooner rather than later.

At the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Payton provided an update on the situation with Wilson, saying he expects a decision to come somewhat promptly.

“We go through the combine week here. Next week, I think Tuesday, Wednesday, we’ll be in meetings with ownership. And so I expect that we’re going to know fairly quickly,” Payton said, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “There’s a couple of factors here. Obviously, the cap projections came out. We’re further down the road with the draft class, obviously the pro free agents. So, I would anticipate it within the next two weeks.”

Payton also kind of told on himself a bit later on when discussing what the team plans on doing at quarterback for the future.

“I saw this humorous meme the other day where there’s a Bronco fan with a shirt on and there were like eight quarterbacks’ names with a cross through it and he’s drinking the quarterback Kool-Aid,” Payton said. “Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it.”

So when Payton says “this next one,” it obviously means a player different from Wilson, which means that, regardless of how much Payton has pretended that Wilson had a chance to start for Denver next season, the Broncos will be releasing Wilson in the coming weeks.

Denver initially acquired the nine-time Pro Bowler in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in March 2022, but Wilson proceeded to have the worst year of his career in his debut campaign in the Mile High City.

The Broncos then hired Payton as head coach that ensuing offseason, and it was clear right from the beginning that Payton and Wilson did not mesh.

Wilson played well in 2023, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions, but he was benched with two games left in the regular season after declining to defer his injury guarantee.

A divorce is coming for Sean Payton and Russell Wilson. It’s just a matter of when.
