The Baltimore Ravens tried to acquire Derrick Henry in a trade with the Tennessee Titans at the deadline back in October, but were rebuffed.
Now, they signed him as a free agent, so in the end, Henry still ended up in Baltimore.
During his first media session as a member of the Ravens on Thursday, Henry said he thought there was a “good chance” he was going to be dealt to the club several months ago. Obviously, that did not happen, but he is in Baltimore now, and that is where he has been wishing to play for a while.
“This is where I knew I wanted to be,” Henry said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “I love the style, the physicality that they play with in all three phases. It’s my style of play as well. It was really a no-brainer, just trying to figure out the business side of things and glad we were able to get it figured out.”
The Ravens were in serious need of a running back with both J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards up for free agency, not to mention the fact that Dobbins has had tremendous difficulty staying healthy.
Henry has not had that problem.
Outside of 2021 where he missed half the season, Henry has been a beacon of durability since entering the NFL in 2016 and has played in all but one game the last two years.
This past season, Henry rushed for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry en route to his fourth Pro Bowl appearance.
The 30-year-old led the NFL in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in back-to-back campaigns in 2019 and 2020, topping out at 2,027 yards and 17 scores in the latter year.
Derrick Henry may not be the same elite rusher he once was several years ago, but he remains a viable threat and should add another dimension to a Baltimore offense that was in clear need of more weapons.
The Ravens went 13-4 and fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game this past season.
