Jared Goff just led the Detroit Lions to one of the best seasons in the history of their franchise, but there is a pretty big elephant in the room right now: Goff’s contract.

Goff’s deal expires after next season, and as of right now, there have been no discussions about the Lions potentially giving him an extension.

Following Detroit’s devastating loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, Goff was asked about his contract status, but he essentially said it is out of his control.

“In regards to my future, it’s not up to me,” Goff said, via the Lions’ official team website. “I love this place. We’ll see what happens as time goes on here. But yeah, I love this place, love Dan [Campbell], love all the coaches, love all my teammates. [But] it’s out of my hands in some ways. It’s up to my representatives and obviously the people upstairs.”

Goff started all 17 games this season, throwing for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 97.9.

He guided Detroit to an NFC North division title, representing the franchise’s first division crown since 1993. He then led the Lions to their first playoff win since January 1992, winning a pair of postseason games against the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Goff appeared to be on the verge of taking Detroit to its first Super Bowl this past Sunday, as the Lions led the 49ers by a score of 24-7 at halftime. However, San Francisco scored 27 unanswered points and eventually held on for a 34-31 victory.

In his three playoff games this winter, Goff threw for 837 yards and four touchdowns while completing 69.4 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 103.3.

The 29-year-old just completed his third season in the Motor City after coming over in a trade with the Rams back in March 2021.

We’ll see if the Lions open up extension talks with Jared Goff in the coming months.
