The Detroit Lions are off to a stellar start this year with a 3-1 record after a 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers last Thursday. Their offense has been solid, and their defense has improved after it was a big problem last year, as it ranks first in rushing yards allowed. Some believe they should look to improve their defense before the trade deadline, possibly even with Denver Broncos’ rising star Patrick Surtain II.
But although many feel the Lions are going to finish with the best record in the NFC North, most do not consider them to be true Super Bowl contenders. One weak point in their game is their pass defense, which is currently 14 in touchdowns allowed and 18th in yards given up.
They could use some help in the secondary, and there happens to be a star cornerback whose name has come up in trade rumors lately: Patrick Surtain II of the Broncos.
The Broncos are suffering through yet another miserable season at 1-3, and their lone victory came by just three points over the winless Chicago Bears in Week 4. Some feel Denver is on the verge of possibly blowing it up, which could even include trading future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson, and thus Surtain could be had for the right price.
Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report suggested the following trade for the 23-year-old All-Pro corner:
Broncos receive: 2024 first-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, 2025 second-round pick
Lions receive: CB Patrick Surtain II
Surtain made the All-Pro First Team and the Pro Bowl last year, his second in the NFL, and he posted 10 passes defended and two interceptions. He already has five passes defended through four games this year, and he could help elevate head coach Dan Campbell‘s defense to the point where the Lions could easily end up with a double-digit win total.
With wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown emerging into a downright stud and quarterback Jared Goff continuing to put forth strong play, now is the time for Detroit to add another piece and get serious about winning its first playoff game since the 1991 season.
