Miami Dolphins: 3 Takeaways from Week 1 Win vs. Titans

Team has a Plan for Albert Wilson

As the new season kicked off, there were a whole host of new announcers to accompany it. Most of them did a pretty good job, I’d say. One of those new announcers was Cris Carter, who made his debut on the Dolphins live broadcast. I came away from the broadcast with two takeaways: With a few more games under his belt, Carter could be really good at this. Secondly, he was really proud of the “inside information” he got from Adam Gase regarding “having a plan” for new wide receiver Albert Wilson.

And boy did they ever.

I’ve ranted and raved to just about anyone who would listen about the versatility Wilson and former New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola bring to the Miami Dolphins. It was nice to see that opinion validated and the “plan” come to fruition. The Dolphins did all kinds of things with Wilson on Sunday that they wouldn’t have dreamed of doing with former wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Wilson split time between the slot receiver and an outside receiver. He also lined up in the backfield multiple times. Furthermore, hearkening back to his college days at Georgia State, he even lined up as a quarterback.

While I doubt we see Wilson take many snaps as a Wildcat quarterback, I won’t be surprised if what we saw Sunday is indicative of the long-term plan. Wilson can line up all over the field and make plays from a wide variety of formations. Whether he’s on the outside, in the slot or in the backfield, defenses need to be aware of him. Not only does that versatility make Wilson a play-making threat, it opens up the offense for everyone around him. Win-win.

Wilson’s stat line wasn’t the greatest, ending the game with only three receptions for 31 yards and no touchdowns. But it’s not all about numbers. Wilson opens up the playbook in ways that were previously impossible for this team. I’m excited to see what other tricks Gase has up his sleeve for Wilson. I can guarantee he didn’t display everything right out of the gates.
