The Miami Dolphins made some major changes to their defensive personnel on the field ahead of the 2023 season. They were hopeful that an upgrade in talent would help turn around a unit that underwhelming during the 2022 season.
Some improvements were made, as the Dolphins ranked 10th in yards allowed. But, they struggled to keep their opponents out of the end zone, as they were ranked 22nd in points allowed.
As a result of the underwhelming production, the team has made multiple changes to its defensive coaching staff under Mike McDaniel. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was relieved of his duties, as he left and took the same job with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Replacing him is Anthony Weaver, who was most recently the defensive line and associate head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. One of the first hires he has made under him is a prominent one.
NFL News & Rumors: Anthony Weaver, Vic Fangio, Joe Barry, Miami Dolphins Updates
Former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry was let go a few weeks ago after the team was eliminated during the Divisional Round against the San Francisco 49ers. It didn’t take him long to find a new job as Barry is being hired as the Dolphins’ linebackers coach.
That is where Barry’s roots were laid, as he landed right back on his feet after three seasons as the defensive coordinator in Green Bay. Barry’s unit underperformed based on the level of talent he had to work with, but he should be given some credit for developing some of the young Packers players into legitimate pieces for their defense.
Interestingly enough, the person he is replacing in Miami, Anthony Campanile, is heading to Green Bay. Campanile is taking over as their linebackers coach as the defensive staff under Matt LaFleur is being overhauled this offseason as well.
Campanile had interviewed for the defensive coordinator position twice with the Dolphins but wasn’t hired. With his contract expiring at the end of the 2023 season, he has opted to move on and take a job with the Packers.
