The Philadelphia Eagles are solely focused on the 2023 season, as they are considered by many to be one of the legitimate Super Bowl contenders in the league. However, it is never too early to take a peek at how things could unfold for the team during the upcoming offseason.
Finding a hole on the current roster is tough as they are strong on both sides of the ball and have excellent depth. But, once the offseason rolls around, the Eagles could be looking for help at one specific position on offense.
Right now, Philadelphia has only one running back, Kenneth Gainwell, under contract beyond the 2023 season. D’Andre Swift, Boston Scott and Rashaad Penny are all set to hit free agency, leaving a potentially huge void in the backfield.
Who could the Eagles look to bring in to fill that void? In the opinion of Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus, Zack Moss of the Indianapolis Colts would be an ideal player to target in free agency.
“Moss has made the absolute most of his opportunities in Indianapolis amid various injuries to Jonathan Taylor dating back to the end of 2022,” writes Spielberger. “From Week 15 of last season through Week 13 of this season, Moss’ 78.9 rushing grade is a top-20 mark among running backs with at least 100 carries, his 3.2 yards after contact per attempt ranks ninth and his 0.23 missed tackles forced per attempt ranks tied for sixth.”
With Taylor on the physically unable-to-perform list to begin the 2023 season, Moss was the lead back for the Colts and he dominated in the role. He carried the ball 89 times for 445 yards, adding eight receptions for 72 yards.
Moss totaled four touchdowns as he was one of the most productive running backs in the NFL in the first month of the season. That kind of early-down production is exactly what the Eagles could use, especially if Swift departs in free agency.
Philadelphia wouldn’t have to break the bank to bring Moss in, either. According to Spotrac, he has a projected market value of $4.6 million, with a little over $9.2 million over the life of a two-year contract.
For the kind of production Moss has provided as a starter during his time with the Colts, that would be a steal for the Eagles. He would be a solid replacement for Swift from a production standpoint and Moss is projected to cost less than half of what Swift is expected to sign for.
