Eagles Predicted To Work Out Deal With Big-Time Playmaker

The Philadelphia Eagles made some changes to their backfield this offseason. Their leading rusher from last season, Pro Bowler Miles Sanders, departed in free agency. He signed a four-year deal with the Carolina Panthers that pays just over $6 million annually.

That ended up being the largest contract a running back signed this offseason as teams around the league have all decided not to invest in the position. The Eagles ended up replacing him with Rashaad Penny in free agency, but their reshuffling wasn’t done there.

During the 2023 NFL Draft, the Eagles also acquired D’Andre Swift from the Detroit Lions. Swift became expendable after the Lions signed David Montgomery and used the No. 12 overall pick on Jahmyr Gibbs out of Alabama.

Entering the last season of his rookie deal, there is some pressure on Swift to perform in 2023. The market for running backs is hard enough to earn in; if you aren’t producing, you give teams another reason not to commit to you.

What kind of deal could Swift be looking at as a free agent in 2024? Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report is predicting that he will re-sign in Philadelphia on a two-year, $6.5 million deal with $3.5 million guaranteed.

Part of the reason he believes Swift will sign such a deal is that the Eagles provide him a chance to compete for a ring. Also, Davenport was realistic about Swift’s chances of breaking out with the Eagles in 2023.

There is no doubt that the talent is there for the Georgia product to make an impact. He recorded over 1,000 total yards two seasons ago and averaged a career-high 5.5 yards per rush last season. But his usage has been negatively impacted by nagging injuries as he has battled numerous ailments in the pros.

Durability concerns, coupled with a crowded backfield featuring Penny, Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell, is more than enough reason for Davenport to predict Swift signs a modest contract relative to the impact that he could have on the field.
