Executive Has Eyebrow-Raising Take On Raiders’ Davante Adams

There is no debate when it comes to where Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams ranks among his peers. Hands down, he is one of the best pass catchers in the NFL and has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon.

In his first season without catching passes from Aaron Rodgers as a professional, Davante Adams kept up his torrid pace. He caught 100 passes for 1,516 yards and a league-high 14 touchdowns, the second time in three seasons he led the NFL in touchdown receptions.

That was enough to earn him his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl nod and a spot on the All-Pro First-Team for the third straight season. History was made with his All-Pro nomination, as Davante Adams became the first wide receiver to earn those honors in back-to-back seasons while playing for different teams.

He is close to joining another illustrious group as well. If he catches 100 passes while surpassing the 1,300-yard mark with double-digit touchdowns, he will join Marvin Harrison as the only player to achieve that mark in four straight seasons.

Davante Adams is as dominant as they come at the wide receiver position, as he uses elite footwork, body control and ball skills to beat whatever the defense has schemed up against him. That is a big reason why he came in as the No. 2 wide receiver on Jeremy Fowler’s positional power rankings over at ESPN.

The rankings were put together using votes from executives, coaches and scouts from around the league. However, one executive did have an eyebrow-raising comment about Davante Adams, suggesting his production may not be only skill-based.

“To me, he’s a little bit reliant on volume of targets,” the executive said. “I guess [receivers] all are. But they just fed him the ball both in Green Bay and Las Vegas, and he benefits greatly from that. Helps him put up numbers. But the flip side is the defense knows what’s coming and can’t stop it.”

That is certainly a hot take suggesting that Davante Adams is more reliant on target volume to produce than other receivers. Every great wide receiver is going to be targeted a lot as teams want the ball in the hands of their best players.

The executive did walk it back a little bit with their comment about the flip side. But, saying Davante Adams is reliant on target volume diminishes the work that he has done throughout his career to get to this point.
