Cam Akers
Back in June, McVay exclaimed that the Rams could take a running back by committee approach in the 2020 season. Even though his comments suggest a shared workload in the backfield, he also said that the hot hand will get the majority of the touches. Also, in his first three seasons as head coach, McVay hasn’t shown a tendency to split carries, even with Gurley being a shell of himself in 2019.
Given that, one of Los Angeles’ running backs are going to emerge as the go-to guy alongside Jared Goff. And seeing that he was the team’s first player selected in this year’s draft, it’s hard to believe that Akers doesn’t end up being the No. 1 running back on the depth chart in Week 1.
Despite running behind a putrid Florida State offensive line in 2019, Akers scampered for 1,144 yards on 231 attempts and 14 touchdowns. He also proved himself as a pass-catcher, snagging 30 passes for 225 yards and another four touchdowns.
Of the running backs that the Rams currently employ, Akers is the most prototypical NFL running back. Therefore, unless he struggles to get a grasp of the playbook due to a shortened offseason, Akers could be extremely productive in fantasy football in 2020.
2020 projections: 218 carries, 974 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns
44 receptions, 376 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns
