Fantasy Football: WRs to avoid taking for the 2020 season

Throughout the offseason, many have labeled Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs as buy candidates in fantasy football. This is due to the blockbuster trade that sent Diggs to the Buffalo Bills early in free agency. While some people assume the move is going to immediately work out, there are definitely multiple reasons to be pessimistic about the duo’s first season together.

First and foremost, while Diggs excels at stretching the field, despite his strong arm, Allen isn’t exactly a maestro at throwing the deep ball. Last season, Allen attempted 72 passes that traveled 20+ yards down the field (eighth-most in the NFL). At the same time, he completed just 25-percent of those deep-ball attempts. Which was good enough for 33rd in the NFL. Reminder: there are only 32 teams in the entire league.

Meanwhile, it’s hard to believe that Buffalo is going to suddenly become a pass-oriented team just because they acquired Diggs. In 2019, the Bills averaged only 34.6 passing plays per game (23rd in the NFL). With Devin Singletary expected to see an expanded role and Zack Moss projected to assume Frank Gore’s role from last season, Buffalo will likely continue to run the ball more often than not. Lastly, Allen still has yet to log a single game where he’s thrown for 300+ passing yards.

Unlike some of the other wide receivers, Diggs doesn’t possess an outrageous ADP (he’s currently WR28 in fantasy drafts). Still, guys like Tyler Boyd and Michael Gallup — who are being drafted after Diggs — seem to be the safer options at wide receiver.

After seeing Allen improve in his second season in 2019, the hype surrounding him and Diggs is somewhat understandable. Besides Diggs though, the Bills also have John Brown and Cole Beasley vouching for targets. With that being said, until Allen can prove to show consistency at quarterback, it may be worth passing on Diggs in the upcoming season.
