Brock Purdy has been entrusted with the pivotal role of quarterbacking the San Francisco 49ers in their quest to triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, in Super Bowl 58.
ESPN’s Jeff Saturday recently proposed an intriguing comparison, suggesting that if Purdy manages to secure victory, he could become akin to what Mahomes represents for his coach, Andy Reid, in the eyes of 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan.
“This could be his Patrick Mahomes for Andy Reid,” Saturday said on Get Up this morning. “Andy Reid couldn’t get over the hump. He was 11-13 [in the playoffs] before Mahomes comes in.”
“Are you comparing Brock Purdy to Patrick Mahomes?” asked a shocked Mike Tannenbaum.
“I just did. I didn’t say as a player, but I said as what could help his coach go from a really good coach to a Hall of Fame coach overnight,” Saturday responded.
Here is the video of the change between Saturday and Tannenbaum to watch for yourself:
It’s important to note, however, that Saturday clarified he wasn’t equating the two quarterbacks in terms of talent, despite how the teaser for the video on X/Twitter might imply such a comparison.
Purdy’s journey from being dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant” to assuming the starting role in a Super Bowl is remarkable. Along the way, he has often been labeled as a “game manager,” a term that typically carries negative connotations in football circles.
Nevertheless, Purdy embraces this label with pride, understanding the crucial role it plays in his team’s success.
